- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 cup whole milk
- Zest of 1 orange
- ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- Zest of ½ orange
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- In another bowl, beat softened butter with an electric mixer until creamy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Mix in milk, orange juice, and zest into the butter and egg mixture until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined—do not overmix!
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool in pans for about ten minutes before transferring to wire racks.
- Beat cream cheese and softened butter together until smooth.
- Gradually mix in powdered sugar and orange zest until fluffy.
- Once cakes are completely cool, frost between layers with cream cheese frosting mixed with orange zest. Spread more frosting on top and sides of the cake.
