Description

Indulge in a luscious Chocolate Orange Layer Cake that combines rich chocolate with zesty orange for a delightful dessert experience. Perfect for celebrations or a sweet treat any day!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • Zest of ½ orange

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, beat softened butter with an electric mixer until creamy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Mix in milk, orange juice, and zest into the butter and egg mixture until combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined—do not overmix!
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool in pans for about ten minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  7. Beat cream cheese and softened butter together until smooth.
  8. Gradually mix in powdered sugar and orange zest until fluffy.
  9. Once cakes are completely cool, frost between layers with cream cheese frosting mixed with orange zest. Spread more frosting on top and sides of the cake.
